Chaitra Navratri 2024: Significance, Date, Time & History

The Hindu festival of Navratri, which spans nine nights, is celebrated in the fall across the Indian subcontinent. Theoretically, there are four seasonal Navratri. The most frequently celebrated fall festival is Sharada, also known as Shardiya Navratri, which is held in honor of the Divine Feminine Devi after the monsoon (Durga). Sandhi Puja and Ghatasthapana Muhurtas are the most frequently observed on Shardiya Navratri. Chaitra Navratri is marked by the same customs and rites of Shardiya Navratri, namely Ghatasthapana and Sandhi Puja.

During the Navratri puja, also known as Vasanta Navratri (Durga), the sacred feminine Devi is worshipped. During the Navratri holiday, Divine Durga is honored in nine different ways. At the same time, followers will offer prayers for Mother Durga, herself, and their families, communities, and nations.

Chaitra Navratri, called after the Sanskrit word vasanta, which signifies spring, is the second most popular Navratri. It occurs in the post-winter lunar month of Chaitra, which is March or April. The event takes place after the spring in some places and after the harvest in others. It is also the first day of the Hindu calendar, which makes it the Hindu New Year, according to the Vikram Samvat calendar.

Significance of Chaitra Navratri

Chaitra Navratri honors the heavenly deity Goddess Durga, who is revered in Hinduism as the pinnacle of feminine forms. She is the most potent feminine force and Shakti (power) in the universe. This makes the day extremely important to Hindu worshipers.

Huge wealth and good fortune are bestowed by the Navratri Puja. On the other side, individuals who seek the blessings of Goddess Durga must strictly adhere to a few rules. For example, adhering to the ritual's strict fasting without consuming any grains, cleanliness, Aarti, and ghatsthapana.

History Of Chaitra Navratri

Hindu sacred writings state that Lord Shiva permitted Goddess Durga to spend nine days at her parents' home. It is thought that during these nine days, Maa Durga vanquished the monster Mahishasur, signifying the victory of good over evil. Additionally, devotees think that by worshiping Maa Durga, they are granted inner strength. From that point on, people began to celebrate the Navratri holiday with great enthusiasm and joy.

Ghatastapana – Chaitra Navratri 2024 Puja Vidhi

Gather the ingredients for the puja: clean soil, an earthen pot with a wide opening, seven distinct grains, a small brass vessel or Kalash, holy thread, betel nuts, mango leaves, unpeeled coconut, coins, red fabric, Durva grass, and marigold flowers.

  • Before calling on Maa Durga, prepare the Kalash by adding a layer of soil to the clay pot's bottom. Put the grains in the ground beneath the dirt. Continue in this manner until all of the soil layers have been added to the pot.

  • Fill the brass or Kalash jar with water, then add the aroma, betel nuts, Durva grass, Akshata, and a few coins.

  • Place five or six mango leaves over the metal vessel's opening and cover it.

  • Wrap the unpeeled coconut in the crimson fabric and fasten it with the holy thread. After that, set this atop the Kalash.

  • Finally, set this brass bowl on the earthenware pot. You can now call upon Goddess Durga during the puja setup.
