Under the Rohini Nakshatra, Bhagavan Sri Krishna was born at midnight on Ashtami tithi, the eighth day. According to the Amanta calendar, Lord Krishna was born in Shravan, but the Purnimantha calendar dates his birth in Bhadrapad. This corresponds to the English calendar months of August and September, and the precise date is determined by the lunar cycle.
Krishna temples are decorated for the occasion, processions are held, and a variety of bhajans, kirtans, and satsangs are held in places of worship honoring the Blue God. Vasudeva delivered Krishna to his friend's residence in the Mathura section of Gokul after the boy was born. Nanda and Yashoda, Krishna's parents, then nurtured Krishna at Gokul.
