History and significance of Maha Shivaratri 2024:

Hindu mythology gives us several explanations for why we celebrate Mahasivaratri. Mahashivratri is celebrated annually to commemorate the union of Shiva and Parvati, who are thought to have tied the knot on this day.

Put another way, Shivratri is said to be the night that Shiva and Shakti, or the masculine and feminine energies that maintain global balance, finally come together. Mahashivratri, according to another tradition, is celebrated to commemorate the day Lord Shiva drank the poison that was churned out of the ocean during Samudra Manthan, saving the world from darkness and despair.

Shiva is also known as Neelkanth (blue throat) because this poison became stored in his throat, turning it blue. Out of the twelve Shivratris celebrated in a year, Maha Shivratri is regarded as particularly fortunate. In Hindu tradition, it is a somber occasion commemorating the triumph over "overcoming darkness and ignorance in life."

Various historical stories explain the significance of Maha Shivratri. One of them states that Shiva performs his cosmic dance of "creation, preservation, and destruction" on this night. According to a different tradition, serving Shiva's symbols on this night can assist a person in overcoming and forgiving their misdeeds, beginning a road of virtue, and reaching Mount Kailash, where they would ultimately attain "moksha."

Celebration of Maha Shivaratri 2024:

Unlike many Hindu holidays, Maha Shivratri is not a blatantly celebratory occasion; rather, it is a night set aside for introspection and self-examination to mature and let go of everything that stands in the way of our accomplishments. Maha Shivratri is celebrated by people nationwide by regional customs.

While some celebrate in the morning, others host pujas and Jagrans at night. Devotees of Maha Shivratri also observe a full-day fast, eating only after taking a bath the next day. The purpose of the fast is to test a person's resolve as well as to obtain Shiva's blessings.

Observing a fast on Mahashivratri is regarded as highly fortunate. It's also good for the body and the psyche to abstain from food and liquids for a set time, and it's said that praising Shiva after breaking the fast makes him happy.

Offerings of milk, honey, fruits, and bel leaves are made to the Shiva deity. After taking a bath in the Ganges, devotees visit the temple, observe a daylong fast, and offer prayers to Shiva. Chanting Om Namah Shivaya is thought to bestow blessings and cause Shiva to grant wishes and desires.

Maha Shivaratri Puja Rituals

The early hours of the morning mark the start of the Maha Shivaratri Puja, when worshippers take a bath before the sun rises, put on fresh clothes, and travel to Shiva temples. For women, this is a very important day as they do the traditional Maha Shivaratri Puja, which includes incense sticks, water, milk, betel leaves, and fruits like jujube or ber. They worship with incense sticks and circumambulate around the Shiva Lingam three or seven times. After the ritualistic pouring of milk, they make offerings of leaves, fruits, and flowers.
